Jiuzhou Fm
Type Locality and Naming
Guihou – central. The Jiuzhou Formation was erected by the Guizhou Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources in 1987. The section for the designation is in Jiuzhou of Huangping, Guizhou.
Lithology and Thickness
The Jiuzhou Formation is mainly represented by a set of clastic rocks consisting of purple red and brick-red conglomerate, gravel-bearing sandstone, siltstone and mudstone. It is 110.8 m thick.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
Its base marked by brick-red massive conglomerate is distinguished from brick-red and yellow massive gravel-bearing sandstone of the underlying Zazuo Fm. It lies conformably or disconformably on the underlying Zazuo Fm, but shows an angular discordance with the underlying strata prior to the Cretaceous.
Upper contact
Its top is marked by yellow gray gravel beds of the Quaternary. It shows an angular discordance with the overlying strata.
Regional extent
The formation occurs in Zazuo of Xiuwen, Jiuzhou of Huangping, Shibing and Rongjiang of southern Guizhou. It is quite persistent in lithology and varies considerably in thickness, ranging from 5 to 230 m.
